NFL email scandal uncovers ‘despicable’ photos

Pressure is mounting on the NFL to release the findings of its probe into the Washington Football Team’s workplace culture, following allegations that inappropriate photos of the team’s cheerleaders were secretly sent around by coaches via email.

The alleged photos were uncovered in emails reported by the New York Times, which exposed racist, misogynistic and homophobic language used by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden, ultimately leading to his resignation this week.

According to the newspaper, Gruden denigrated the idea of women referees, used homophobic slurs and exchanged pictures of cheerleaders wearing only bikini bottoms.

Speaking to the Daily Beast, the cheerleaders claim the emails show topless images of them from a past swimsuit photoshoot video and were allegedly shared between Gruden and then Washington general manager Bruce Allen. Gruden was working for ESPN at the time while his brother Jay was hired by Allen to coach the team.

Detailed in a Washington Post article in 2020, team staffers were allegedly told to to take behind-the-scenes video of the swimsuit shoot and to cut a separate clip featuring bare nipples and the pubic areas of the cheerleaders while they were changing clothes.

According to the outlet, the video was shared with Washington team owner Daniel Snyder, who later denied the allegations.

A number of cheerleaders made formal complaints of inappropriate behaviour and took legal action against the team alleging the video was disseminated among team executives.

The NFL fined Washington $10 million after its investigation into the team’s culture and workplace concluded in July. However the league reopened the case, which involved 650,000 emails, leading to Gruden’s demise and the discovery of the photos.

The cheerleaders have called for the investigation to be made public, especially since the emails involving Gruden were aired in the media despite the coach not being the subject of the investigation.

“It’s despicable, really, to see that there is more evidence of exploitation and violation of these cheerleaders who I worked very closely with,” Melanie Coburn, a four-year WFT cheerleader and the squad’s marketing director for 10 years told the Daily Beast.

Another former cheerleader Candass Correll, who was with the team from 2016 until 2021, told the website victims have not been informed about the findings of the investigation.

“If it wasn’t for [the New York Times article,] we would’ve never known that those pictures were going through the mail servers between these two really important people in the NFL,” she said.
