New Manga Raja to Chronicle the Rise of Chandragupta Maurya

A new manga titled Raja is set to chronicle the rise of Chandragupta Maurya, the legendary warrior-king who founded the Mauryan Empire, one of the most powerful empires in Indian history.

The manga, which is written and illustrated by Kouta Innami, will be published in Kodansha’s Monthly Young Magazine starting July 21st, 2023.

Raja will follow Chandragupta’s coming-of-age story as he navigates the complexities of politics, forms alliances, and leads his armies in epic battles. Along the way, he will be joined by his mentor Chanakya (mentioned as his traditional name Kautilya), a brilliant strategist who will help him to unite ancient India under his rule.

It is not known if the manga will make its way out of Japan. A manga with similar Indian themes, Burning Kabaddi, revolves around the sport of kabaddi and is created by Hajime Musashino. It was even adapted into a 12-episode anime in 2021, but both the manga and anime are not officially available in India.
