Netflix’s Live-Action One Piece Gets Release Date and First Teaser

It’s almost time to set sail on the Grand Line: Netflix has finally revealed its first teaser and announced the release date for the live-action One Piece series. It’ll hit the streaming service on Thursday, August 31.

Initially announced in January 2020, Netflix’s One Piece is, of course, based off of the long-running manga and anime written and drawn by Eiichiro Oda, who was involved in the series production. The show was developed by Steve Maeda and Matt Owens.

How much of the 1,000+ episode anime Netflix’s One Piece will manage to get through in 10 episodes is a big question mark, but we can assume that we’ll see Monkey D. Luffy (played by Iñaki Godoy) avow his resolve to become the king of the pirates and find the legendary One Piece treasure and assemble his Straw Hat crew: the three-sword swordsman Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu, who starred in Netflix’s live-action Ruroni Kenshin film), navigator Nami (Emily Rudd), womanizing chef Sanji (Taz Skylar), and somewhat cowardly slingshot wielder Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson). Sadly (or maybe fortunately), the series won’t include Chopper or Nico Robin.

Ahead of the teaser reveal, Netflix brought the Going Merry — which production straight-up built for the series — all the way to Sao Palo, Brazil, from where Tudum is hosted this year. The principal cast also recreated a shot of their characters:

Netflix has had a mixed bag when it comes to live-action anime adaptations, its most recent stumble being Cowboy Bebop. The same production company, Tomorrow Studios, is developing One Piece. Fingers crossed that this one falls in the Good Adaptation column.
