NADA and NCERT to introduce ethical sports practices in schools – Times of India

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) aim to create awareness in schools about doping, which is plaguing the sports fraternity for quite some time. With the introduction of value-based sports education, anti-doping measures and affirmative sporting values will be included in the sports curricula. This will encourage young sportsmen to refrain in unfair and unethical sports practices. Students will be introduced to value-based sports education.
Speaking to Education Times, Ritu Sain, director-general, NADA, says, “Students need to be introduced to value-based sports education from the early stage of schooling so that they adopt clean sports practices once they attain an elite level in sports. The first part deals with imparting sporting values of equity, fair play, and integrity which involves interaction with students, parents, and teachers.”
The second part of this education relates to the hardcore anti-doping measures which are about making them aware of the prohibited substances and preventing their use by athletes. “It is essential for the students and physical education teachers to have a clear understanding on this. We have joined hands with NCERT to make students and parents aware of the value-based sports education which would promote the practice of fair play and clean sports,” adds Sain.
“The educational content related to value-based sports education would be prepared by NCERT which would be subsequently disseminated on the Education Ministry’s website, YouTube channels, and the DIKSHA portal,” adds Sain.
Amarendra P Behera, joint director, CIET-NCERT, says, “We would develop the educational e-content relating to value-based sports education. In addition to this, we would also develop the content in the form of audio and talking books, etc so that children with special needs are also able to understand the concept of value-based sports education. Post developing the e-content, we would disseminate the content to a wide community of students through PMeVIDYA, DIKSHA, ePathshala portal and app, DTH TV, radio channels under PMeVIDYA, and youtube channels. Values of equity, inclusion, and integrity are integral to education and character building.”
Sudha Acharya, chairperson, National Progressive Schools Conference (NPSC), says, “The collaboration between the two bodies would qualitatively enhance the sports education ecosystem in the country as students would be motivated to adopt ethical practices in sports. In the past, NCERT has already developed value and Physical Education Cards (PEC) that are being used in teaching students.”
