MP on £65k brags about ‘crazy’ workload with claims of sending 192 emails a day

A Liberal Democrat MP has claimed she sends over 192 emails per working day and has opened 30,000 items of casework since 2019 – This was said in a flyer that was posted through constituents’ doors.

Sarah Olney, MP for Richmond Park, who earns £65,738 a year, has been met with backlash from some of her constituents who believe that the data can’t be correct.

On the flyer that was posted around Richmond, Sarah claimed she has sent 105,000 emails, opened 30,000 items of casework, and written 737 questions within the two years that she has represented Richmond Park.

The flyer that was used to present Sarah’s claims that she had a ‘crazy’ workload

The maths means that per working day Sarah would send 192 emails and open 55 pieces of casework over the two years (542 working days) she has been in office.

Among all this work, she still has to attend parliament, speak in debates and carry out other ministerial duties.

Her claims have been met with scepticism from some of those within her constituency who say that this is a “crazy” workload and something that “surely can’t be done”.

One social media user sarcastically said: “I’ve already had an email this morning from hard-working Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney.

“In light of the most recent revelations about the Conservatives and their lockdown parties in Downing Street, I think we should support her and fund her to send even more emails.”

Another commented: “Has she employed someone to reply to your 100,000 emails?”

Other social media users claimed that the emails must be “copy and pasted” with multiple people added into each email to make up “such huge numbers”.

One social media user did receive an email from the MP, but he didn’t like it, and said: “I received an email in reply from Sarah Olney and It was dreadful. Ed Davey then effectively apologised and said someone would send a better response.”

On her MP page, Sarah is described as: “Passionate about supporting British businesses, especially small businesses and entrepreneurs. In her spokesperson role she has prioritised creating green jobs and improving public transport for all users.

“Sarah wants to see a real focus on achieving net-zero carbon emissions from transport, energy and homes. She is pushing the government to deliver new green jobs right across the country, to create a better, cleaner and more sustainable future for everyone.”

There is no doubt she does have a lot of work to do, her constituents however doubt it is as much as she has recently claimed.

Sarah Olney was contacted for response but did not respond at the time of publication.
