Motorcyclist killed after crash which led to major road being closed for hours

A man has died after a crash involving his motorbike and a car which led to a busy main in Salford being sealed off for hours.

Emergency services were scrambled to Leigh Road in the Boothstown area of the city on Friday night (18 March) at around 7.10pm to reports of a serious collision.

Tragically, the rider of the motorbike – a man in his 30s – suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said the driver of the car remained at the scene and is currently assisting them with their enquiries. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Leigh Road was closed in both directions at the junction of Booth Hall Road on Friday evening for several hours as police and traffic collision investigators could be seen carrying out enquiries.

One eye witness described seeing around ten police vehicles coming off Leigh Road near to the roundabout. He described around 20 officers in the area.

“I thought something had fallen off a table downstairs. I thought nothing of it until I went outside at quarter to seven and the road was closed.”

In a statement, GMP said: “We were called at around 7.10pm on Friday 18 March to a report of a serious collision involving a car and a motorbike on Leigh Road, Boothstown.

“Emergency services attended and sadly the rider of the motorbike – a man in his 30s – suffered fatal injuries.

“His family have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.

“The driver of the car remained at the scene and is assisting us with our enquiries.

“No arrests have been made and anyone with information or dash-cam footage should call 0161 856 4741 quoting incident 2757 of 18/03/2022.”
