Mobility of students and professionals between Australia-India gets easier – Times of India
New Delhi: Easing the mobility of students and professionals between India and Australia, the two countries signed a Framework Mechanism for Mutual Recognition of Qualifications on Thursday. Post the signing Australian education minister Jason Clare said that the Australian government will be contributing 1.89 million dollars for running skills programmes in India in the area of agriculture which is a critical sector for India. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that both the countries agreed to create new frameworks of partnership and widened the scope of an Australia-India Education Council (AIEC) to also include cooperation in skill development.
The agreement was signed following a bilateral meeting in New Delhi between Pradhan and Clare, which has been part of the commitment by Prime Ministers of both countries at the 2nd India-Australia Virtual Summit, held on March 2022, wherein they had agreed to establish a joint task force for mutual recognition of qualifications.
The govt-to-govt mechanism for mutual recognition of qualifications, the announcement of critical skills project and 11 institutional MoUs is expected to create more opportunities for two-way mobility, empower citizens and pave the way for making education the biggest enabler in taking India-Australia bilateral relationship to greater heights.
Post-signing, Clare, appreciating India’s National Education Policy 2020, said that it is breath-taking in scope and will transform India by giving a big push to jobs, businesses, economic productivity and creating opportunities in all areas. “India has set the target of providing 50% of its youth with either higher education or skill education by 2035 and Australia would be privileged to partner with India in this programme.”
Clare also informed that Australia is working on top priority basis to clear the pendency of education visas for Indian students.
A number of institutional level MOUs were also exchanged between India and Australia’s university sectors on Thursday, which will promote research and academic collaborations between the two countries in several key sectors. These institutions are driving the bilateral cooperation between India and Australia across a wide range of fields – from bio-innovation to law to industry solutions.
Stating that both countries are aligned to making the knowledge pillar a key aspect of the bilateral relationship, Pradhan said that as suggested by India, the scope of AIEC has been widened to also include cooperation in skill development.
