Mobile PlayStation Games Draw Closer As Sony Patents New Controller

A new patent has been published by Sony Interactive Entertainment that appears to suggest a new mobile-style controller is in the works, could a new handheld PlayStation device be on the way?

The likelihood of a new PSP or PSVita being in the works is probably slim, but Sony’s CEO Jim Ryan has previously stated that the company will be bringing some first-party titles to mobile devices by March of 2022.

Many fans will likely be aware that Sony has recently delved into bringing various PlayStation exclusive titles such as God of War, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and more to PC. Suggesting that the company is extremely interested in branching their games out to other devices than just their PlayStation consoles.

But if playing Sony titles on a PlayStation or PC isn’t enough for you, the latest patent suggests taking your games on the go is about to get a whole lot easier.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Patents New PlayStation Mobile Controller

As spotted by VGC, a new patent was recently published by the Japanese Division of Sony Interactive Entertainment for what appears to be a mobile-style controller.

The patented design can be seen in the image below, and looks awfully similar to the PlayStation 4’s DualShock controller instead of the newer DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5.

The only difference that sets it apart from the original DualShock controller is the much larger touchpad/screen in the centre of the device. The description of the patent states that it is “a left side grip portion and a right side grip portion gripped by the left and right hands of the user”. Whilst also includes “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion”.

Details of exactly how this controller will work are still unknown, but it will likely use PlayStation’s Remote Play or Cloud features to stream your owned games right to the device.

Let us know in the comments below, are you excited for Sony to start bringing popular PlayStation exclusives to mobile?
