Group chats are getting some big overhauls in the coming months.

That includes the addition of a Communities feature – letting you create big groups that contain sub-group chats.

But WhatsApp is also developing a group membership approval system.

It was discovered by the tech sleuths at WABetaInfo, who dug into the beta test version of the app.

The new system would allow group admins to approve new participants.

“When turned on, admins must approve anyone who wants to join the group,” WhatsApp explains.

The feature is currently “under development”, which means it’s not actually available to test right now.

But it will likely appear for beta testers in the coming weeks or months.

“Thanks to this new setting, group admins can decide who can join the group,” WABetaInfo notes.

“There will probably be a new section that lists all current requests of users that want to join the group.

“In this section, group admins can accept or decline incoming requests.”

It’s currently unclear when the new feature will roll out to the general public.

But when it does, it will be a major change to group chats.

If you want to try new WhatsApp features first, follow our guide below to join the beta.

How to join WhatsApp beta

To download WhatsApp beta for your smartphone you need to go to Google Play on your Android and search for WhatsApp.

Scroll down the page until you see “Become a Beta Tester”.

Tap the “I’m In” button and then click “Join” to confirm.

Now all you have to do is wait for the update to the beta version of the app.

Joining the WhatsApp beta on iPhone is more difficult, and has limited capacity.
