Microsoft is Working on a New Patent to Allow Players to Access Physical Games on the Xbox Series S

A shift towards digital games is becoming more and more prominent in the gaming industry. Both next-gen consoles have released their own digital editions for the flagship consoles. Xbox Series S is the digital edition from Microsoft and Sony has their own PlayStation 5 digital variant. These digital variants only allow download for digital games and do not hold a disc drive to run any physical copies.

Digital variants of consoles are cheaper, but the player does need to make some sacrifices such as never getting to use a physical disc to run a game and no backwards compatibility. One of the main features that was highlighted for the next-gen consoles was the outstanding backwards compatibility for games, but the Xbox Series S players lost out on the fun and had to sacrifice their games from the previous generation console.

According to a report by Game Rant, it seems that Microsoft has understood this woe of the players and is working on a patent to make things easier for them. Their new patent will allow the player to authenticate any Xbox physical disc through an external disc drive, and then the player will be able to access that game digitally from the Xbox Series S store.

One thing that is not sure is that whether the patent will allow the player to keep the digital edition of the game permanently after the authentication or let them use the game whenever the disc is authenticated. The former seems less likely as the players will be able to sell the disc after authenticating it once and continue to play the game too.

This comes as exciting news for all the Xbox Series S players that have their collection of Xbox One games just lying and collecting dust. One thing to note is that this is a patent and not all patents reach completion, so players should wait for an official announcement from Microsoft to know for sure whether this feature will be coming to Xbox Series S any time soon.
