Max Verstappen and Lando Norris argue as Red Bull star threatens to go to boss

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris were spotted arguing in the Hungarian Grand Prix paddock after the McLaren ace destroyed the Dutchman’s winners trophy. Verstappen even threatened to go to McLaren team boss Zak Brown to replace the damaged ceramic vase.

Norris smashed his champagne bottle on the top-step of the podium after clinching P2 in Budapest. The cup then dropped off the podium, smashing onto the floor into several pieces.

The two drivers were asked about the incident by F1 junior presenter Scarlett moments after the chequered flag. However, it appeared the argument wasn’t too serious with both drivers smirking throughout the exchange.

Verstappen explained: “You said it was my fault?” Norris replied: “She blamed you it wasn’t me!” Max added: “I gave you a yellow card! Red card!” Norris answered: “No that was you!”

Verstappen commented: “We’ll just go to Zak because apparently he has a bit of spare money still for the personnel in the team so I guess he can also spend it on a trophy!”

McLaren took to social media to apologise to Verstappen after TV cameras picked up the incident. They posted: “We are so, so sorry…@redbullracing and @Max33Verstappen.”

Red Bull quickly responded as they confirmed the incident had caused substantial damage to the trophy. They tweeted: “We can’t take you anywhere glad to have you up there with us though. We’re gonna need some glue.”

Norris later laughed at the incident and even added that he “didn’t care” he had damaged it. Scarlett asked: “You’ve done something. What did you do with the trophy the most important part?

Norris retaliated: “Ah yeah. That’s Max’s though. Mine’s in perfect shape.” Scarlett added: What happened to it? Norris fired back: “Aw I don’t care. It’s broken.” Scarlett fired back: “How did you break it?

Norris added: “Happily. It wasn’t on purpose. I was annoyed that I was P2. That is my celebration to hit the bottle. Max put his trophy in the wrong place.” The Hungarian Grand Prix trophies are made by Herendi Porcelanmanufaktura Zrt and are all homemade. It is understood to take around six moments to design each one at a cost of £34,000 (€40,000).

However, Verstappen is likely to get a replacement vase to add to his stunning collection. According to F1 reporter Sándor Mészáros, Herendi’s CEO Attila Simon has confirmed they would be on hand to solve any issues When asked what would happen if the trophy was damaged, he revealed: “We are ready to react, no worries.”
