Mason Greenwood spotted training with Anthony Elanga after Erik ten Hag decision

Mason Greenwood has been pictured training with Manchester United team-mate Anthony Elanga as he prepares to return to football next season. The 21-year-old remains suspended by United but is ramping up his comeback after an 18-month absence from the pitch.

The Sun have released an image showing Greenwood posing with Elanga and Udinese star James Abankwah during a training session in the sunshine.

Elanga hasn’t yet returned to Carrington, where Erik ten Hag’s non-internationals and youth players started pre-season training last week.

Greenwood also hasn’t returned while a five-month investigation into his Old Trafford future continues after he was suspended last January.

Five months ago, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

And Ten Hag is reportedly reluctant to sell Greenwood, prompting United to look for loan opportunities as they ponder a long-term decision.

It’s unclear whether the No 11 will join Elanga in returning to Carrington before he completes a loan move away in the coming weeks.

But a Sun source confidently confirmed he was working towards a return to action, stating: “He’ll be playing football somewhere this coming season.”

Ten Hag has taken a 26-man squad to Oslo to kick start an eight-match pre-season schedule against recently-relegated Leeds United.

Elanga is expected to join other international stars back at the club’s training base over the next week before the tour of the United States.

Before United fly stateside, they will travel to Edinburgh for a friendly against Lyon, for which Ten Hag will hope to have more first-team stars available.

Greenwood is under contract at United until 2025, with the option to extend it a further year.

The report claims that Ten Hag and most of the senior squad are willing to give him another chance to make it at Old Trafford.

However, reservations lie within United’s women’s team and some club sponsors, which has left the club with an important decision to make.

A loan move will allow more time to come to a resolution while ensuring that if Greenwood enters Ten Hag’s plans next summer, he will be at optimum fitness.
