Marvel’s She-Hulk Just Received a New Power 15 Years in the Making

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1 reveals a new power for Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk that’s been in the making for fifteen years.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX and VC’s Joe Caramagna, reveals a new power for Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk that’s the result of something that happened 15 years ago.

At the start of Reckoning War Alpha #1, the moon is destroyed in order to impede the plans of the Watcher and Nick Fury, who are attempting to stop a force called “The Reckoning.” This leads to pieces of the moon falling to Earth and what at first appears to be a Badoon invasion, requiring Earth’s biggest teams and superheroes to band together.

During the fight, Time Variance Authority agents Justice Peace and Justice Love arrive on the scene. This leads to some confusion as to just how Walters can see them, especially since those around her cannot. Justice Love soon realizes She-Hulk can see them because “In the past, I was the one who brought you here. To one of the possible key points in your timeline. You’ve bee ntime-looped, Walters. You’re now chronally sensitive.” The TVA agents then leave, unsure if they’ll even have an existence to return to in the future.

The editor’s note attached to Justice Love’s statement refers readers to 2005’s She-Hulk #3. Written by Slott, She-Hulk #3 features pencils from Juan Bobillo, inks from Marcelo Sosa, colors from Avalon’s Dave Kemp and letters from Dave Sharpe, as well as a host of guest artists. The issue saw She-Hulk on trial at the TVA for her attempts to alter the timestream. She-Hulk was soon shown a dystopian future reality where the Earth was ruined, which appears to be the result of what’s happening in Reckoning War Alpha #1. As such, She-Hulk has essentially had this power for the last fifteen years, and it’s only now that it’s been revealed.

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Walters first apepared in 1980’s The Savage She-Hulk #1. After receiving an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Walters became She-Hulk. Like Hulk, She-Hulk is incredibly tough and difficult to kill. However, unlike her cousin, Walters generally maintains her personality. The character is set to make her Marvel Cinematic Universe in Disney+’s She-Hulk series, which releases later this year. She’ll be played by Tatiana Maslany in the show.

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics. The next issue in the event, Slott and Rachael Stott’s Fantastic Four #40, releases on Feb. 16 .
