The Master of Kung Fu and his family are under attack in Shang-Chi #9 by Gene Luen Yang and Marcos To, as Shang-Chi’s enemies target his bloodline.

The Five Weapons Society is under attack in the next arc of Shang-Chi.

In Shang-Chi #9, the Master of Kung Fu will clash with a monster of his own making when a group of his greatest villains targets his bloodline. After months of buildup, Shang-Chi and the Five Weapons Society will have to fight for their lives as the mysterious mastermind behind their troubles finally reveals his true identity. The issue will mark the beginning of a new story arc by writer Gene Luen Yang, who is joined by incoming Shang-Chi artist Marcus To, with covers by Leinil Francis Yu.

The Master of Kung Fu’s family has been at the heart of Shang-Chi since Yang began his run with the character in 2020. After taking his rightful place as the head of the Five Weapons Society, Shang has been trying to teach his siblings to live virtuous and honorable lives. While his cry for compassion was rejected by Sister Hammer, he was joined by Sister Dagger, Brother Sabre and Sister Staff. However, the struggle to stay the path has led to tension amongst the Four remaining Weapons. Though the ensemble managed to stay on the same page long enough to rescue Shang-Chi’s long-lost mother from the Negative Zone, their upcoming threat will test their bond more than anything they’ve experienced thus far.

Recently, the Five Weapons Society was attacked by the Red Dot Collective, a gang of arms dealers that was trying to sell Shang-Chi a stolen suit of Iron Man armor. Despite turning down the offer and imprisoning the Collective, Shang-Chi was attacked by Iron Man over the stolen suit. The fight ended in a standstill and the two parted on good terms, but it pushed Shang-Chi further away from his former allies. Speaking on how Iron Man’s fight impacted Shang-Chi’s mindset, Yang said, “He wants to be good, but he’s also kind of afraid that his family legacy is going to push him towards evil at some point.”

Before Shang-Chi defends his family from their new mysterious foe, the Master of Kung Fu will be fighting against the Avengers. The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes don’t trust Shang-Chi and suspect that he is using the Five Weapons Society as a front for criminal activity, like his father before him. After consulting with the likes of the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, the Avengers plan on breaking into Shang-Chi’s home to retrieve the Cosmic Cube, regardless of who stands in their way. In the wake of their clash, Shang-Chi will be forced to reevaluate his relationship with his family and what he holds dear, as new secrets about his lineage come to light.
