Marvel, WEBTOON Announce Their First Collaborative Comic

Marvel joins forces with WEBTOON for Eternals: The 500 Year War, a new seven-part digital comic book series.

Marvel Comics and WEBTOON have officially announced Eternals: The 500 Year War, the latest addition to Marvel’s Infinity Comics lineup of digital comic series. While Marvel’s existing Infinity Comics titles like Hulking & Wiccan have allowed the House of Ideas to dabble in WEBTOON-style storytelling, The 500 Year War marks the first official collaboration between the two publishers.

Eternals: The 500 Year War is a seven-part series launching today, Jan. 12, on Marvel Unlimited. The title will make its way to WEBTOON starting Thursday, Jan. 20. The 500 Year War stars the titular race of living gods, who recently made their big-screen debut in director Chloé Zhao’s Marvel Studios film Eternals. This is worth mentioning, as the comic’s Marvel Unlimited launch coincides with Eternals‘ streaming debut on Disney+ today. What’s more, The 500 Year War‘s artwork clearly takes cues from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the Eternals.

The 500 Year War features a rotating roster of international creators, starting with writers Dan Abnett, Aki Yanagi, Jongmin Shin, Ju-Yeon Park, David Macho, Rafael Scavone and Yifan Jiang. They are joined by artists Geoffo, Rickie Yagawa, Do Gyun Kim, Magda Price, Marcio Fiorito and Gunji, as well as colorists Matt Milla, Carlos Macias, Fernando Sifuentes, Pete Pantazis and Felipe Sobreiro.

“Bringing Eternals: The 500 Year War to Marvel Unlimited will open up doors for our international creative teams to tell much more personal stories by setting them in their homelands,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. “These stories also break down borders and provide excitement beyond anything fans can imagine with these diverse, multi-cultural characters.”

“Marvel’s Eternals are the perfect fit for WEBTOON readers around the world: a global narrative crossing borders and boundaries, and a diverse new cast of heroes, all available in an innovative mobile format,” added WEBTOON U.S. Head of Content David Lee. “This series is perfect for anyone who wants to see more of the incredible Eternals in action, expanding their universe with new stories and a new format on WEBTOON. We’re thrilled to work with Marvel on Eternals: The 500 Year War and can’t wait to collaborate on more incredible stories together.”

Marvel isn’t the first major American comic book company to collaborate with WEBTOON, with DC having previously partnered with the digital comics publisher for Batman: Wayne Family Adventures.
