Marvel, DC Artist Shares Planet Hulk-Inspired Silver Surfer Art

Veteran comic book artist Mike McKone transports the Silver Surfer back in time with new fan art that sees Galactus’ herald ready to go medieval.

An art piece by veteran comic book artist Mike McKone transports Marvel’s Silver Surfer back to the iconic Hulk event “Planet Hulk.”

McKone, best known for his work on DC Comics’ Teen Titans and Marvel Comics’ Exiles and Fantastic Four, posted the version of Galactus’ premier herald to his official Twitter account, shown as he appeared in The Incredible Hulk #95. The image depicts the hero ready for battle, using his board as a shield and wielding a large, savage mace while wearing bronze-colored armor. This is exactly how he appeared while called “Silver Savage” by spectators to fight against the green goliath in comics.

Created by Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 (1966). Named Norrin Radd, he started as an astronomer on his home planet, Zenn-La, before offering himself up to Galactus and serving as The Devourer of Worlds’ herald so that his world would be spared. The character quickly became a fan favorite among comic book readers after his debut, and still remains popular today with appearances in the recent Defenders miniseries and the upcoming title Silver Surfer: Rebirth, set to release Jan. 19.

However, the Silver Surfer has appeared in many mediums beyond comics, including multiple video games, animated television series, novels and more. As for cinema, in 1989, film student Erik Fleming was given permission from Marvel to create a short film about the Surfer, but the character wouldn’t make his official big-screen debut until 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He was portrayed by Doug Jones but voiced by Laurence Fishburne. The film’s predecessor, Fantastic Four (2005), is available to stream on Disney+ with the sequel streaming on Peacock TV.

McKone’s medieval Silver Surfer isn’t the only recent example of fan art that gives iconic characters from Marvel a knightly makeover. A series of fanmade portraits, titled “The Order of The Avengers,” features many members of the superhero team from the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Black Widow/Natasha Romanov, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Steve Rogers/Captain America and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider visualized in the aesthetic of high fantasy. The images showcase highly detailed armor and references to each character’s signature powers and/or weaponry.

There is more Marvel fan-made content than only pieces of fan art that invoke the style of high fantasy and the Medieval Era. One cosplayer built a truly massive costume of the Juggernaut, showing off just how unstoppable Cain Marko truly is, while another created a comics-accurate cosplay of Carol Danvers’ Ms. Marvel costume from the 1970s.
