A MAP has revealed England’s deadliest areas for car crashes outside of London – but are they near you?

The new government data compared the number of road fatalities in each local authority area with the size of its population to reveal the rates of death or serious injury.

The rates are measured in deaths or serious injuries per 100,000 in 2021.

Given the number of local authorities and the busy roads, it is perhaps unsurprising that London councils make up the top 13 spots on the overall list.

However, when the capital is removed from the equation, the data shows hotspots of road casualties across the country.

Blackpool tops the list by some distance, with a rate of 306.5 compared with second place Kent’s 273.2.

Blackburn with Darwen is a close third at 271.7, followed by Bradford with 264.

Surrey then rounds out the top five with 263.4.

Other areas in the top ten include Brighton and Hove and Kingston upon Hull.

Drivers in Lincolnshire will be unhappy to hear that the Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire areas all crack the top ten.

Likewise, the list is dominated by the Yorkshire and Humberside region, with four out of ten falling in that area.

The South East then has three entries, while the North West has two and the East Midlands one.

Gary Digva, founder of road safety tech company Road Angel said: “This latest data reveals those areas and local authorities in England, outside of the capital city, which have seen the highest numbers of deaths or serious injuries amongst motorists. 

“And although only the North West, South East, Yorkshire and the East Midlands feature on the list, this does not mean that drivers up and down the country in other regions shouldn’t drive with caution.

“Whenever you’re behind the wheel you should be driving with care, but especially during the Spring showers we’re beginning to see where a vehicle’s stopping distance is increased from 2 seconds to 4 seconds.

“With an average number of 267.2 deaths or serious injuries per 100,000 people across these top 10 regions, we’re urging motorists to stay safe on the roads and abide by the rules of the Highway Code.”
