Manchester United have confirmed the departures of players at the end of their contracts, with Mason Greenwood retained despite an internal investigation ongoing.

Greenwood has been suspended by the club since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October last year.

Those charges were withdrawn in February but he is still suspended while the club carry out their investigation over whether the 21-year-old brought Manchester United into disrepute and therefore breached his contract.

He is on the retained list confirmed by the Red Devils as he is still under contract, although the club state that the investigation is not impacted by that.

The striker has not played for Manchester United since 22 January 2022 when he started in a 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League.

David De Gea is not on the retained list as his contract despite his contract coming to an end on 30 June, although the announcement confirmed: ‘Discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract.’

Leaving the club are the likes of Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard, while Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens and Manni Norkett are leaving United’s academy.

The full statement on new contracts read: ‘In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals.

‘Extensions were also processed for defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird, while Under-21s player coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay after discussions over a new contract.

‘Young forward Mateo Mejia has also been offered a deal.’

On the departing youngsters, the Red Devils added: ‘The Academy is proud of all our departing young players and their achievements while at the club. They will all be supported in securing professional contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme, and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.’
