A man who libelled Jeremy Vine on Twitter has agreed to pay out for making false claims that the TV presenter was the previously-unnamed BBC star at the centre of allegations.

However, instead of paying damages directly to Vine, the man will instead be giving the sum to charity at the celebrity’s request, after Huw Edwards was revealed to be the BBC star involved.

In a tweet shared on Sunday, Vine shared an update on the situation, after the individual in question issued a public apology.

The Channel 5 presenter tweeted: ‘On 8 July @AndyPlumb4 libelled me by alleging that I was the BBC presenter at the heart of a story in The Sun that day.’

He continued: ‘He has now acknowledged that he was wrong, and has apologised. At my request, he has also agreed to pay £1,000 to @mndassoc rather than paying damages.’

The charity that Vine asked the man to pay the £1,000 to is MND Association, a charity that is committed to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by motor neurone disease.

Vine shared a screenshot of a message that the man wrote, whose Twitter account is now restricted so that only people who already follow him can see his tweets.

The man acknowledged that a false claim that he made about Vine was ‘untrue’, adding: ‘The post should not have been sent.’

He continued: ‘Although the post was deleted, many screenshots were made and probably still exist. I retract the statement made in this tweet and any interference therein in their entirety.’

In another tweet, the man said: ‘I would add that I sincerely and unreservedly apologise to Mr Vine for the untrue and defamatory statements made about him, which were entirely baseless.’

Vine has received praise for asking the man to donate the money to charity, with one person commenting: ‘That’s an important charity. Well done on resolving this.’

‘Some good coming out of this,’ another wrote.
