De Gea has left Old Trafford as a free agent after negotiations over a new contract broke down in the latter stages of last season.
The Spaniard is widely considered a United legend after spending 12 years as the club’s No 1, gaining respect from fans and colleagues alike.
After taking to social media to confirm his exit, he received several heartfelt messages from fellow United stars.
But Rashford’s didn’t go according to plan…
The 25-year-old forward – or his social media team – accidentally included the heading for what looked to be a drafted list of farewell messages to De Gea.
It sparked suggestions that his goodbye may have been half-hearted as he enjoys a summer break with team-mate Tyrell Malacia and friends in Los Angeles.
Shortly after, Rashford reposted the goodbye message and disabled comments, likely to prevent being called out for his previous blunder.
He spent over seven years with De Gea in the senior set-up after debuting in February 2016, winning four major trophies together.
And unlike the veteran stopper, Rashford is expected to extend his United contract before its 2024 expiry.
He was a crucial figure in Ten Hag’s maiden season at Old Trafford, netting 30 goals in all competitions, a career-record return.
And Rashford will likely replace De Gea as one of the Red Devils’ top earners after the latter’s departure freed up significant space on the wage bill.
Where De Gea’s future lies is currently anyone’s guess, but he will have options on the table, despite a troublesome end to last term.
Saudi Arabia is the new hotspot for Europe’s ageing high-profile stars, while a return to Spain has also been mooted.
But United will have a new goalkeeper between the sticks in 2023/24 as the club grow closer to sealing a deal for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana.
