Kane has just a year remaining on his Spurs contract and there was optimism at United that he may finally be prised away from North London. Reports suggested that the 29-year-old was keen on a switch to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have tried to strike an agreement with Spurs over a possible transfer. However, Levy has always remained firm that his star player would not be sold to strengthen a Premier League rival.
According to The Times, United chiefs are now ‘increasingly resigned’ to the prospect of being unable to sign Ten Hag’s top target. Levy will ensure that Kane sees out the remainder of his contract before allowing him to have the pick of interested clubs as a free agent next summer.
United could, though, be close to signing Kane’s England team-mate Mason Mount. Ten Hag wants to strengthen his midfield and Mount was identified as a player who could add creativity.
Like Kane, Mount’s contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2024 but, unlike Spurs, his club have seemingly decided to cash in this year. United are supposedly close to completing a deal that would become their first transfer of what could be a busy summer window.
Chelsea had supposedly been hoping for around £70m for the 24-year-old, despite Mount’s contractual situation. United wanted to pay a little less, reportedly hoping for an agreement over a fee closer to £60m.
With a pursuit of Kane supposedly all but over, United will move on to other targets for the No 9 role. Marcus Rashford shouldered most of the scoring burden last season and there is a feeling that another striker is needed in order to mount a serious challenge for trophies next term.
Rashford struck 30 goals in an incredible personal campaign, the most the 25-year-old had ever managed in a solitary season. The team-mate closest to his goal haul was Bruno Fernandes, who struck 14 times in all competitions.
Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund have both been linked with moves to Old Trafford. Either star could arrive as part of a mini overhaul of Ten Hag’s squad.
