Adrien Rabiot’s proposed move to Manchester United is off due to the midfielder’s huge salary demands.
With Erik ten Hag desperate for additions in midfield, United turned to Juventus midfielder Rabiot earlier this month, agreeing a fee with the Serie A giants thought to be worth an initial £15million.
United’s football director John Murtough flew to Turin last week in an attempt to close the deal, holding talks with the player’s agent and mother Veronique.
But after lengthy negotiations, the move is now set to collapse with United unable to agree personal terms with the 27-year-old.
There remains a sizeable gap between United’s offer and Rabiot’s demands and while the Premier League side were ready to make the midfielder one of their top earners, the Manchester Evening News describe his demands as ‘obscene’.
It serves as another major blow as the club desperately attempt to bring in more new faces before the transfer deadline on 1 September.
United are weighing up a very ambitious move for Real Madrid star Casemiro, sending officials to Spain on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of a move.
Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is another option the club are exploring.
Frenkie de Jong has been a target throughout the summer and while United have not yet given up hope of landing the Barcelona midfielder, a deal is thought to be unlikely at this stage.
United have also suffered setbacks in their attempts to bolster their options up front. Benjamin Sesko was among the targets considered but the 21-year-old has now agreed a move to RB Leipzig next summer.
More recently, the club have made their interest known in Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha – with some reports on Monday suggesting a £42million move was close to being agreed.
However, Cunha’s preference is to remain in Spain with Atletico viewing the 23-year-old as an important player for the future.
Alvaro Morata, Mauro Icardi and Jamie Vardy has also been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
