Premier League champions Manchester City are on the verge of signing Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been seeking a left-back since they sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal in a £32m deal earlier this summer.

City were strongly linked with a move for Marc Cucurella but pulled out of negotiations with Brighton due to the club’s asking price, with the Spaniard eventually sealing a move to Chelsea for £62m.

Sky Sports are now reporting that City are now in advanced talks with Belgian side Anderlecht over signing 21-year-old Gomez.

It is thought that the club might look to loan him out once he arrives at the Etihad, but it is still possible for him to break into Guardiola’s first-team squad.

Gomez, under contact until 2025, is known for his impressive assist tally, with the defender registering 12 in 34 Belgian top-flight games last term as Anderlecht finished third.

He joined Anderlecht last year following an impressive two-year loan spell with Huesca in Spain as he helped the side gain promotion to La Liga.

Before that, he played for Borussia Dortmund, but found his opportunities limited with the Bundesliga side and only made two appearances for the first team.

Gomez started his career in Barcelona’s academy, winning the UEFA Youth League in 2017-18, and also played for Barcelona B.

Gomez has represented Spain at every youth level from U16 to U21. He scored nine goals in 23 games for the U17s and four goals in five games for the U21 side.

He won the UEFA European U19 Championship with Spain in 2019 and the UEFA European U17 Championship in 2017.

City have signed Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega so far this summer as they look to defend their Premier League crown and attempt to win the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

Guardiola’s team are back in action on Saturday when they host promoted side Bournemouth following their opening win over West Ham.
