The Main Man made his own superhero team in Superman vs. Lobo #3 and the very specific entry requirements mean Batman is eligible.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman Vs. Lobo #3, on sale now from DC Comics.
With the Justice League soon to be killed off in Justice League #75 in April, the DC Universe will soon be looking for their replacements. Superman vs. Lobo may have just provided the perfect answer to who will replace DC’s premier super team. In the latest issue of the series, Lobo assembled his own group of heroes comprised entirely of aliens. If he played his cards right though, this extraterrestrial team could even include… Batman?
Lobo created his own twisted reality to live out a very specific wish in Superman Vs. Lobo #3 (by Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie, Mirka Andolfo, Arif Prianto and Fabio Amelia). He had himself and the Man of Steel swap roles in the DCU, making himself a hero called Main-Man, whilst Clark Kent was reduced to being a despotic villain. Part of this new reality was a new team that Lobo led. That team was the League of Last Sons.
The series has so far focused on the fact that Superman and Lobo are both the sole survivors of their worlds. This theme was continued when they ventured to the WildStorm Universe which was all but annihilated, leaving only a handful of sole survivors of its own. The League of Last Sons continued this trend and showed what the Main Man really wanted if he was a hero. It also gave DC a new team to call on when the Justice League fails.
The team is comprised of the sole survivors of various alien worlds, realities, and so on. Its ranks include their leader Lobo, who goes by “Main-Man” here. He’s the last Czarnian (after he killed the rest). The League also includes Martian Manhunter, who is the last survivor of Mars, as well as his analog, Zemm Son of Saturn, who is the last survivor of Saturn. The final two members are WildStorm’s Zealot, the last of the Kheran Coda warriors after the destruction of her universe, and Tobias Manning, who is merely a time-displaced outlaw from the Wild West and an old enemy of Superman.
Therefore, despite the emphasis on aliens who survived the destruction of their home, the team can find “Last Sons” in many forms. There are still plenty of humans on Earth but none from the nineteenth century like Tobias Manning, making him a sole survivor too. That’s why Batman can fit into this team. If anything, he has even more reason to be a part of it. As he told the evil Superman, he is the sole survivor of the Wayne line. He even remarked that this was why he got on so well with the Man of Steel, as both were the only survivors of terrible tragedies that took their families from them.
On the one hand, Batman’s revelation is touching and emotional, on the other hand, it gives this ludicrous team a new possible member. With Batman on the squad, they would be even more formidable than they already are. Both Lobo and Manhunter are already on Superman’s level. As the Man of Steel is also a Last Son, he too is eligible for membership. By recruiting the World’s Finest to the League of Last Sons, the Main Man’s new team could do more than just replace the Justice League – they could surpass it.
