Liverpool are reportedly confident of completing a move for RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian star would become the Premier League outfit’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the £35million acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.
It is claimed that Liverpool would beat Newcastle to the signing of the 22-year-old after the Saudi-backed Magpies pulled out of the race. Newcastle are supposedly set to bolster their own midfield ranks with the signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.
Buoyed by Newcastle reportedly pulling out of the competition, Liverpool are ready to ‘push ahead’ with the £60million signing of Szoboszlai. The player is believed to have a release clause to that amount inserted into his Leipzig contract, although there are ‘conflicting reports’ over when it expires.
Talks over a deal could apparently include negotiations for Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho to head in the opposite direction. The Portugal U21 starlet has been linked with the Bundesliga side in recent weeks, having failed to properly break through at Anfield since his arrival from Fulham last summer.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool are ‘confident’ of wrapping up a move for Szoboszlai. An agreement had allegedly seemed difficult to conclude just earlier this week, but the Reds were soon given confidence that a deal was possible.
Szoboszlai is apparently high on Liverpool’s wish list, with midfield recruits prioritised ahead of the 2023-24 season. Jurgen Klopp’s midfielders struggled with injuries and a loss of form last term, playing a pivotal role in an underwhelming year.
A Hungary international with 32 caps aged just 22, Szoboszlai has shone at both club and international levels in recent years. He joined Leipzig from RB Salzburg in 2021 and has gone on to play 91 times for the German outlet, scoring 20 goals and assisting on a further 22 occasions.
Liverpool have considered several midfielders this summer as part of an overhaul of Klopp’s options for the position. Nice’s Khephren Thuram, Southampton’s Romeo Lavia and Manu Kone of Borussia Monchengladbach have all reportedly been looked at.
However, the latter is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury while playing for France at the U21 European Championship. Liverpool also pursued Mason Mount, but the Chelsea star seems destined for a switch to Manchester United.
Liverpool’s midfield regeneration has already started to take shape this summer, with the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton. The Argentine World Cup winner helped the Seagulls qualify for the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.
