LIVE: Ford gun’s vow despite ‘nowhere’ race pace

Cameron Waters has promised he’s going to “rag” his Mustang in the Bathurst 1000 today.

Waters finished third in the top-10 shootout, but still fears the Mustang package will be uncompetitive on race day – even suggesting he might elect to stay in traffic to benefit from the slipstream down the straights.

The Mustangs have been consistently slightly slower in a straight line both up Mountain and down Conrod Straights.

Ford had a last-minute request to run an updated aero package for this weekend blocked on Thursday morning.

Waters said if he sits in a slipstream, it can give him a boost of up to four tenths of a second over a lap.

If I drive around in the slipstream all day, it probably will help me quite a lot,” he said after the shootout.

“I think it was three or four tenths down the straight so that was a big chunk of my time.”

Waters said he is quickest relative to the rest of the field across the top, but still not as quick as Kostecki.

Asked about his prospects of winning, Waters was downbeat.

“It’s been the story of the year, hasn’t it? Over race distance we’re nowhere,” he said.

“I can’t really answer that question … I still think we’ve got dramas, and race pace dramas, so hopefully we get a bit of luck.

“I’ll rag the thing for the time that I’m in the car, and (co-driver James Moffat) does the same, and hopefully something happens.”

The race start is under two hours away.
