Lidl has won the medal for cheapest UK supermarket beating rivals Aldi, Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda. A comparison of 33 everyday items came in at £53.06 at Lidl compared to £64.55 at Tesco. The same 33 items cost £60.19 at Asda, £63.26 at Sainsbury’s, £72.73 at Morrison and £85.40 at Waitrose.
The Grocer, who carried out the test, did not include Aldi, Iceland, Amazon, M&S and Ocado, although it usually does. The rising cost of living is evident from rising fuel prices and inflation, which is now at 5.5%. Whilst Lidl may be the cheapest supermarket, the basket of items still cost 4.5% more than a year ago, or an extra £2.31.

It’s not the first time that Lidl has been crowned the cheapest supermarket recently. Consumer group Which? found Lild to be the cheapest supermarket in its rankings last month. The monthly price test by Which? compared the cost of 23 essential goods including own-brands and items such as Hovis bread over the course of 28 days – to reveal the cheapest grocer that month. It found that, on average, shoppers would have paid £24.21 at Lidl, beating Aldi by just 62p.
