Lewis Hamilton opens up on ‘breaking down egos’ during difficult year

Lewis Hamilton has claimed Mercedes “broke down egos” from seven back-to-back world championship wins during an underperforming 2022 season. Hamilton stressed the team had to learn and grow together after repeated failures early on.

However, the British champion revealed the difficult year had been “empowering” and had improved his relationships with colleagues. Speaking in a Mercedes-Benz Q&A, Hamilton said: “It’s been impressive, for sure.

“I always knew that we could do it. I never doubted that we would get there in the end, but there was lots of trial and error, and so much failure this year. There were times we brought upgrades and they didn’t work, and times we tried different things and it didn’t work.

“I tried so many things and failed so many times but through that you learn and grow. That’s what it’s been about this year. It’s been about failure, breaking down egos, strengthening our relationships, and strengthening our communications. From that perspective it’s been really empowering.”

“He has held us up at times, kept the energy level up when it was down even on days where it was difficult for him.” Mercedes looked closer to the front by the end of the season with Hamilton challenging Verstappen at the front in the United States and Mexico.

The Silver Arrows driver pledged to take the team back to the top after competing in Austin. Russell also secured the team’s only win of the season in Brazil, promoting Wolff to show more optimism ahead of 2023.

He commented: “Now we are just pushing forward for next year. It’s rough, it’s bad, it’s okay to feel like this, but next year, we are back.”
