Lewis Hamilton is unfazed by reports that Charles Leclerc is holding talks with Mercedes and believes that the conversations are likely nothing more than harmless chats between co-workers. Hamilton’s own future at Mercedes continues to be a topic of debate with no further update on a potential new contract.
While the seven-time world champion has repeatedly stated that he remains committed to Mercedes, questions will continue to be asked with a new deal yet to be signed. The longer time goes on without Hamilton putting pen-to-paper on an extension, the likelier reports are going to emerge about a possible replacement at Mercedes.
It was reported in Italy this week that Leclerc is one of the drivers in discussions with the Silver Arrows. It’s suggested that Leclerc is seen as a potential target to step in if Hamilton chooses to retire at the end of the season.
But Hamilton has brushed off any suggestion that he’s set to be replaced by Leclerc. The 38-year-old suspects Leclerc’s reported talks with Mercedes are simply due to the “relationship” he already has in the paddock.
When asked whether speculation over Leclerc’s future had any impact on his own, Hamilton said: “No, not really. I think maybe some of the drivers all have different relationships with different bosses and stuff.
“I like where I am, I love my team, and I’m grateful for the journey we’ve been on and what we’re working on moving forwards. So, it doesn’t have any impact, no.”
The rumours surrounding Leclerc switching to Mercedes have been around for several months now. And the Ferrari driver addressed the speculation back in March, insisting he has no desire to leave his current team.
“I’m in red,” he said. “I think it’s quite obvious how much I love Ferrari, and how much I want to win with Ferrari.
“There’s not much more to say. For me it’s pretty clear.” Leclerc currently has a contract with Ferrari running until the end of the 2024 season.
