Latest Greater Manchester Covid infection rates – as cases fall in one borough

Coronavirus infection rates continue to rise in nine of Greater Manchester’s 10 boroughs, with cases falling only in Trafford, latest data shows.

Wigan continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in Greater Manchester.

It comes as the number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus has risen, as the Omicron variant continues to tear through the nation.

Latest figures show that 2,434 people were admitted to hospital with the virus, bringing the seven day admission to a total of 15,812 – a week on week increase of more than 50 per cent.

Wigan recorded a rate of 2557.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending January 5, which represents the latest data available from the UK Health Security Agency.

Oldham recorded the highest weekly increase in case – up 28 per cent.

The lowest infection rate is in Manchester, where the rate is 1952.9 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 2232.6 cases per 100,000 of the population.

That’s higher than the national average, which is currently 1821.7 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 63,308 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week ending January 5, the data reveals.

The Greater Manchester weekly total has increased by 6,890 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was up 12 per cent in the last week.



The latest data

The infection rate is higher than the national average in all 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester.

In the week ending January 5, a total of 78 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test across Greater Manchester, 34 more than the week before.

Trafford is the only area where the trend is down.

The latest infection rate in the borough is 2036.0 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 4,837 confirmed cases recorded in Trafford, which is 49 fewer than the previous week – or a fall of one per cent.

The trend is up in Oldham, where there were 5,414 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending January 5, which is 1,195 more than the previous seven days.

That is up by 28 per cent compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Oldham is 2278.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Manchester, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 10,853 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending January 5, which is 344 more than the previous seven days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Manchester is now 1952.9 cases per 100,000 people – up by three per cent week-on-week.

There was a rise of 11 per cent in cases in Bury over the week ending January 5, and the infection rate is now 2126.3 cases per 100,000 population.

Bury recorded 4,055 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period – 410 more than the previous week.

Stockport saw a total of 6,617 cases in the week ending January 5, which is 182 more than the previous week. That is a rise of three per cent.

In Stockport, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 2249.2 cases per 100,000 people.

In Wigan, there were 8,459 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending January 5, which is 1,313 more than the previous seven days.

Wigan has the highest infection rate in the region.

The data – published on Sunday – showed the infection rate in Wigan is down slightly compared with the previous day, but the week-on-week trend is up by 18 per cent.

There were 6,541 positive tests over the last week in Salford, which is 794 more than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Salford is up by 14 per cent and the latest infection rate is 2489.9 cases per 100,000 people.

In Bolton, the number of cases is up by 21 per cent compared to the previous week – leaving the infection rate at 2073.9 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 5,978 positive Covid-19 tests in Bolton in the week ending January 5, which is 1,022 more than the previous week.

In Tameside, the latest infection rate is 2371.5 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone up by 12 per cent.

A total of 5,386 people tested positive for Covid in Tameside over the seven days ending on January 5, which is 591 more than the week before.

Rochdale recorded 5,168 coronavirus cases, which is 1,088 more than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Rochdale is 2310.7 cases per 100,000 people – up 27 per cent week-on-week.
