Lampard drops biggest hint yet on Chelsea star Mason Mount as Man Utd linked

Mount’s Chelsea contract is due to expire at the end of next season, making him a possible target for the Blues’ Premier League rivals. Talks with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy over an extension appear to have stalled, with United now apparently favourites to secure the 24-year-old’s signature.

Chelsea caretaker head coach Lampard seemed to suggest that an exit seems likely. He told Sky Sports: “In the olden days you’d get people saying, ‘Why are you leaving the club?’, but in the modern days players do move on. It’s just a shame we’ve got to this situation where it looks like it’s happening.”

Lampard added: “It’s a difficult situation because from working with Mason – and not just Mason, other players when I was here before… they have either gone on to be really important players for the club that have a real relationship with the fans back and forth, because they really feel the club having been in the academy since eight years of age.

“And some of them have gone on to other clubs and the club have done well out of that and you wish them well in their careers.

“I think with Mason, particularly, as an individual, I don’t know what the solution is going to be because it’s the club and Mason’s issue. I don’t know where exactly Mason is at personally, he’s got a year left on his contract.

“I know he’s held in high regard at the club and I know the club are trying to do what they can to make him stay, but I also think that Mason, I’d never want to stand here in the modern day and talk about what a player should do because they’ll see it all from their own eyes.”

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that United are Mount’s preferred destination. However, there could yet be several obstacles in the way of a deal.

United would need to agree a fee with Chelsea for the transfer to take place, with the latter still holding out for a sizeable amount of money despite Mount’s contractual situation. The Old Trafford outfit also allegedly want to prioritise the signing of a new striker over a midfielder.

The impending arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea could yet play a key role. Pochettino is understood to be a big fan of Mount and may attempt to convince the academy graduate to stay.

Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly still interested in pursuing a deal for Mount. Abdominal surgery is set to keep the Three Lions international out of Chelsea’s remaining two matches, potentially meaning he has played his last game for the West Londoners.
