Football fans watching King Charles’ coronation were left confused after claiming to have heard the Champions League anthem being played during the ceremony. On Saturday, The Prince of Wales ascended to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death in September and was officially crowned in Westminster, with millions of people watching around the world. But some people were left bewildered by the apparent familiar sound of the football anthem ringing out.
The popular number, which is played before every European game in the club competition, was composed by Tony Britten back in 1992 when the tournament was founded by UEFA.
Titled ‘Champions League’, it contains lyrics in German, French and English to reflect the main languages of UEFA.
Fans were adamant that the same tune was played out during the proceedings at Westminster Abbey as King Charles awaited his official crowning.
One Twitter user @Thogden wrote: “That’s gotta be the Champions League music”, with three crying emojis to sum up his utter bafflement. Another with the handle @AbbieGotBoyd wrote: “That’s the Champions League song #Coronation.”
@SalimAWriter said: “Keep thinking the choir are going to break into the Champions League anthem #Coronation.”
However, this proved not to be the case. The melody behind the ‘Champions League’ song was adapted from ‘Zadok the Priest’, which was written by George Frideric Handel.
The song was composed back in the 18th Century in 1727 for the coronation of King George II and it was fitting that it was replayed for Charles’ ceremony – the first since Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1952.
And it was this historic classical tune that was performed during the ceremony, as opposed to Britten’s famed anthem, on Saturday.
Comedian Dara O Briain joined in with his own joke: “Tuned out for a while; now they are building a box to the Champions League music. Does Charles pop out the top?” the Irishman said.
While there is no Champions League football until Tuesday when Manchester City take on Real Madrid, Premier League clubs joined together to congratulate King Charles on his memorable day, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham among those to send tweets wishing the best to the 74-year-old and Camilla, the Queen Consort.
