CBeebies is about to get a royal visitor as Kate Middleton will read a Bedtime Story on the channel to mark Children’s Mental Health Week.

Kate Middleton has chosen to read The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson to align with this year’s theme of Growing Together – which has been designed to help those involved to move beyond their comfort zone.

The children’s classic follows the story of Plop, a baby barn owl, who is helped by others to grow in confidence and overcome his fears.

In a first-look picture from her stint on CBBC, Kate wears a comfy sweater and sits by a fire, which will no doubt get children across the country in the mood for bed.

Speaking about the duchess’ involvement in the beloved ritual, director of BBC Children’s and Education Patricia Hidalgo said: ‘I couldn’t be more proud to have The Duchess read a CBeebies Bedtime Story as we mark the 20th anniversary of our CBeebies and CBBC channels.

‘It’s such a special and relevant tale and perfectly represents this years’ Children’s Mental Health week theme.

‘I can’t wait to see her deliver her own take on such a classic story and I’m sure our audience can’t either.’

CBeebies and CBBC celebrate 20 years on air on February 11 and has seen celebrities Tom Hardy, Rege-Jean Page, Dolly Parton, Ryan Reynolds, and many more appearing on the channel during its course.

The Duchess of Cambridge has continued to raise awareness of the importance of early childhood experiences and launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in June 2021.

Speaking during the roundtable discussion at the London School of Economics, the duchess said she was ‘really excited’ to launch the centre.

She added: ‘So my hope today, through the report and through this new centre, to show that change really needs to happen, and the time for action is now.

‘Because I feel that this is the social equivalent of climate change, where we followed the science for many, many years.

‘And that is what we have to do with early childhood development if we want to build a happier, healthier world.

‘The more we learn about early childhood and the first five years of life the greater imperative it is to act.’

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark read by The Duchess of Cambridge will air at 6.50pm, Sunday February 13.
