Karnataka mutt heads rally behind CM Yediyurappa amid guessing game

Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa has secured the support of about 50 heads of various mutts amid reports that the BJP leadership planned to replace him. Political observers have no recollection of such a large group of religious heads supporting a CM in Karnataka.

The 78-year-old CM thanked the mutt heads, who held a meeting with him on Wednesday, for reposing faith in him, but said he would abide by his party’s decision, according to a person privy to the discussions.

Assembly polls are due in May 2023, and the mutt heads want BJP to allow Yediyurappa to complete his term. “Karnataka should have a stable government for the next two years,” the seers told the media after their meeting with the CM. Some seers warned that the BJP would face consequences and the party may even vanish from the state if the central leadership went ahead with its plans to change the CM.

Though the delegation had religious leaders from all caste groups, majority were from the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. Two Lingayat Congress MLAs too have said the BJP would invite the community’s wrath if Yediyurappa was removed. Tumakuru’s powerful Siddaganga mutt head Siddalinga Swami, who led the team, said all seers who met the CM wanted him to complete the term. “Monsoon and floods have started. We are in the middle of Covid pandemic. The state needs a stable government to deal with the situation.” He told journalists that the CM did not speak about his plans to resign.
