Justice League: Superman’s Newest Powerhouse Foe LEVELED A DC Landmark

Superman and the rest of the Justice League just came up against a powerful new threat — and his attack has already cost the heroes a major location.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League #65, on sale now from DC.

The Justice League has recently reassembled with one of their most potentially powerful rosters in recent history. Superman, Batman, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Flash, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Black Adam, Hippolyta, and Naomi have come together not just to protect their world, but the entire universe. But thanks to their status as some of the world’s greatest heroes, it puts a massive target on their backs.

After one of their greatest new threats makes his presence known, Synmar Utopica’s attack costs the Justice League one of their most iconic bases, the Hall of Justice, in Justice League #65 by Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Pugh, Romulo Fajardo Jr & Josh Reed.

Synmar vs Justice League

Introduced in Superman #25 by Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis, Synmar Utopica hails from the world of Synmar. An alien race long observed Superman following the destruction of Krypton, watching from afar as he grew into a hero and seemingly becoming a “light god” — a figure in their religion. One of their soldiers, Eisno Alkor, was selected to be improved into a champion for their entire race — and someone who could hold their own against the Man of Steel. Superman has already faced off with him once — with the battle quickly pushing Superman to the edge of his powers and genuinely challenging the mighty hero, and barely eked out a victory.

Now, it appears that Synmar has returned to Earth. While Superman is able to turn to the whole League for backup this time, it quickly proves to be a near-impossible challenge to contain the wrath of the alien warrior. Teleporting above the Hall of Justice, the League quickly evacuates the nearby civilians while Superman tries to hold Synmar back. After that’s completed, Naomi is sent into the Hall of Justice to protect her family and rally Justice League Dark, while the core team — minus the absent Black Adam but alongside their interns, the Wonder Twins — confront Synmar head-on. Their attempt to overwhelm him doesn’t go well, and instead results in most of the team being bombarded with the alien’s abilities.

Justice League Hall of Justice Destroyed

Batman tries to put in an emergency call to any and all Justice League allies and rallies the rest of the team to stand their ground against the alien menace. But Synmar’s assault is too much, and he casually pushes through their defenses — crashing headlong into the Hall of Justice and seemingly bringing the building down atop of him and everyone else still inside. Introduced in the animated series Super-Friends, the Hall of Justice has become a common element of Justice League stories, often serving as an Earth-bound base of operations for the heroes. It’s survived plenty of massive battles in the past, and was recently restored following being brought down during the multiverse-shattering events of Dark Nights: Death Metal.

But Synmar’s newest attack stands as one of the greatest assaults on the building yet. Despite the civilians within the building and the message the Hall of Justice sends to the world, there’s almost nothing the League can do to stop someone as powerful from Synmar from leveling it all on his own. It’s a brutal reminder of the fallibility of the League, and could exacerbate any number of problems — both by tearing down an iconic seat of power for the heroes and unleashing any threats that were being contained within the building. Even if Synmar is defeated, the image of the alien breaching the Hall of Justice will likely hurt the standard of the League across the world — and could set up a lot of chaos for the Justice League going forward.
