Jurgen Klopp rubs salt into Man Utd wounds in dig at Liverpool rivals

Jurgen Klopp wasted little time in picking out Liverpool’s 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United as his main highlight for their season, although he’s hoping it can be topped by a “special” finish to the campaign. It’s been a disappointing campaign for Liverpool after coming within two wins of a historic quadruple last year.

Klopp’s side have failed to build up any momentum all season long with injuries playing a part, but more concerning has been the drop-off in performance from some of his star players. They’re unlikely to finish inside the top four unless Newcastle or Manchester United suffer a late-season collapse.

Their form has picked up of late and are on a three-game winning run, including a 6-1 thrashing of Leeds away from home. It’s one of just a few highlights for the Liverpool boss from this season – but one match stands out above the rest.

While the 9-0 humiliation of Bournemouth back in August broke records, it was the demolition of United at Anfield last month that Klopp picked out as his favourite memory of the campaign. The Liverpool boss was asked whether watching a game such as Newcastle’s thrashing of Tottenham last week helps him reminisce about his own high-scoring results with the Reds.

Klopp stated he’ll have more time to worry about that kind of things when he’s fully retired, but for now has set his team the challenge to make this season not only about thrashing their arch-rivals but also finishing the campaign in a flurry.

“I always thought I would have time for these things after my career,” he said. “So this season, if we don’t do something really special, will be remembered for the 7-0 against United.

“I hope when people speak about it in a few years they will look back on it and [say] ‘that is the year we beat United 7-0’ and that they could say something nice on top of that. And after that we qualified still for whatever. That will be nice, but if not then we have to take that as well.”

Liverpool are back in action on Sunday against Tottenham in a huge game that could determine who clinches a Europa League spot. Klopp’s side are just one point adrift of Tottenham with a game in hand.

A top-four spot is still mathematically possible with Liverpool seven points away from United, but Erik ten Hag’s side do have a game in hand.
