Despite reportedly vowing to “never” with Disney again, sources close to Johnny Depp revealed he could make a long-awaited comeback.
Although the Pirates of the Caribbean became a multi-billion dollar franchise with Depp at the helm, Disney severed ties with the actor after his court case with Amber Heard.
In 2022, the 60-year-old sued his ex-wife for defamation after she accused Depp of domestic violence which was followed by a highly publicized and bitter court battle.
As a result, Disney parted ways with Depp which MailOnline claimed he was “furious” for the studios “blind dropping him even though Amber lied”.
While the actor’s reps have since these claims to bed as “inaccurate,” fans could potentially see Depp back on screen as Jack Sparrow.
An insider told PEOPLE: “Anything is possible if it’s the right project he’ll do it.”
While the source didn’t specify if Depp would feature in a Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off, The New York Times noted Disney was “seemingly inching the door open.”
He could also be re-casted for a slot in the Fantastic Beasts franchise he was dropped from after he lost his case against News Group Newspapers
After the publications labeled him a “wife-beater,” a judge ruled the claims to be “substantially true.
In 2022, the Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Times he was working on “two Pirate scripts,” and teased: “One with Margot Robbie, one without.”
When asked about Depp’s involvement, Jerry stated: “Not as this point” but “the future is yet to be decided.”
While fans remained hopeful for Depp to bounce back from the tumultuous court case, the actor made an impressive comeback to cinema with the release of Jeanne du Barry.
Despite Jerry’s uncertainty a former Disney exec shared their conflicting views and stated there “is a huge appetite” for Depp’s return.
In 2022, the Disney exec informed PEOPLE: “I absolutely believe post-verdict that Pirates is primed for rebooting with Johnny as Captain Jack back on board.
“There is just too much potential box-office treasure for a beloved character deeply embedded in the Disney culture.”
“With Jerry Bruckheimer riding high on the massive success of Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, there is a huge appetite for bringing back bankable Hollywood stars in massively popular franchises.”
