The Masked Singer has won best entertainment programme at the Bafta TV Awards 2023, beating Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Strictly Come Dancing.
Presenter Joel Dommett, who has hosted the ITV show since the first series was released in 2020, was blown away by the victory and admitted that he didn’t see it coming.
Taking to the stage, the comedian, who glowed on the red carpet alongside his pregnant wife, said in his speech: ‘I really didn’t expect this, Strictly normally wins everything.
‘Thank you so much to ITV firstly for believing in this silly show, it is so silly and it’s so wonderful, it has brightened up so many families and homes.’
He continued: ‘It is such a joy to make. All of the crew love making it. Thank you to all of the celebrities who have been on the show.’
Judge Mo Gilligan also stepped up to the mic to say a few words, adding: ‘People tied to mock it when it first came out, and now it has won a Bafta.
‘It is great escapism…people at home don’t want to watch something depressing.’
Last year, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway was awarded the Bafta TV award’s best entertainment programme gong, with Life & Rhymes taking the accolade in 2021, and Strictly Come Dancing in 2020.
Britain’s Got Talent enjoyed two consecutive wins in 2019 and 2018, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway taking it in 2017, and Strictly winning in 2018.
This isn’t the first victory for The Masked Singer UK though, with the ITV show previously winning in the entertainment and costume design categories at the Royal Television Society Awards.
In 2021, the series won an International Emmy Award for best non-scripted entertainment.
