Joe Lycett’s countdown to shred £10k starts amid Beckham ultimatum

Joe Lycett’s countdown to shred £10k starts amid Beckham ultimatum

Joe Lycett has said he’s in “a bit of a pickle” after David Beckham fails to acknowledge his challenge over 2022 World Cup deal. The comedian is yet to receive a response from the former professional footballer.

Last Sunday (13 November), the comedian released a video on social media in which he directly addressed David about his deal promoting the World Cup in Qatar.

The comic explained he has received “radio silence” from the former Manchester United player.

In the video, Joe said that he would give £10,000 to charities that support gay people in football if David pulls out of his reported £10 million deal over to the country’s stance on LGBT+ issues.

If the footballer did not, the comic said he would shred his own money (£1,000 for every £1m allegedly earned by the former England player) and live stream it this Sunday at midday on the website BendersLikeBeckham.com.

Taking to Twitter, Joe has started his countdown after sharing a photo of his cash ready to be put in the shredder.

In view of his 1.2 million followers, he penned: “3 hours… #benderslikebeckham.”

In an earlier post, Joe tweeted: “4 hours… #benderslikebeckham,” and has since counted “two hours” to go with a link to his website.

His move sparked a divide among social media users, who have reacted to the Birmingham-born star.

Raging Roin argued: “There’s something quite crass & disconcerting about shredding money in front of people who may literally be deciding whether to heat their homes or feed their kids during a cost of living crisis. Regardless of the (valid) point you’re trying to make. I’m sure there’s a better way.”

Giovanni agreed: “Joe! DON’T burn the 10K. It would be obscene to do so, when so many charitable concerns are screaming out for donations and money… Do the right thing.”

Improv commented: “People like me struggling with finances. Wanting to take my autistic daughter to Disneyland as she told me she wants to go kills me inside to see someone could do this. If Joe Lycett shreds that money will lose me as a fan.”

Jojo tweeted: “So you’re only targeting Beckham. Why not the other pundits, the England team, the fans who’ve travelled to Qatar? Easy answer to that… because Beckham means publicity for you.”
