UPDATE: Rising Victorian jockey Ethan Brown’s condition has been updated from critical to stable at Royal Melbourne Hospital following a horrific fall at Flemington on Saturday.

Brown, 23, was listed as critical on Saturday night and had to undergo emergency surgery for internal injuries. On Sunday he was listed as stable.

He fell while aboard Maximillius in the $1 million Group 1 feature race Australian Guineas, after colliding with Holymanz, ridden by Mark Zahra.

Zahra was treated at the track and cleared of serious injury, but Brown’s horse rolled on him and he was taken away in an ambulance.

”Ethan has internal injuries and undergone surgery tonight to arrest internal bleeding issues,” the Victorian Jockey’s Association said on Saturday night.

“Will require further surgery.”

An update on his condition is expected on Sunday afternoon.

Both horses involved in the fall avoided serious injury and were taken back to the stables.

Stewards launched an inquiry into the fall but have not been able to complete the investigation, given Brown remains in hospital.

”I thought I could get through and maybe shift Ethan a tiny bit,” Zahra told stewards after the race.

“As I’ve gone to press (through the gap) Damien (Oliver aboard Amenable) took a narrow gap outside him.

“At the time I thought I could get through and make room for myself but as it turns out, no.”

Brown has won three Group 1 races in his career to date, and collected more than $17.7 million in prizemoney for connections of his rides.
