Jay-Z is now the most Grammy-nominated artist ever with 83 nods
Jay-Z may have 99 problems, but being at the bottom isn’t one.
He has now landed the new record for most Grammy nominations ever with 83 total.
The rapper has surpassed Quincy Jones — with whom he was previously tied at 80 nods — after he received three 2022 Grammy Awards nominations on Tuesday. Jay-Z landed one for Album of the Year for Kayne West’s “Donda” and two in the Best Rap Song category, for DMX’s “Bath Salts” and West’s “Jail.”
Ex-Beatles member Paul McCartney now comes up just behind the rapper with 81 nominations after he nabbed an additional two for 2022 as well.
Jay-Z has won 23 Grammy Awards in his career, including Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Everything Is Love” in 2018 and four Best Rap Song wins, including for “Empire State of Mind” and “Savage.”
His wife, Beyoncé, also made history with last year’s 2021 Grammys, becoming the most-nominated woman and most-awarded singer in the award show’s history.
For the 2022 Grammys, this time around will look a little different.
Two new categories have been added — Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Música Urbana Album (Latin Music Field), bringing the total to 88. In addition, the Recording Academy announced that it eliminated nomination review committees, so winners will be determined by a majority vote.
“This is a new academy, one that is driven to action and that has doubled down on the commitment to meeting the needs of the music community,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason in a previous statement.
Musicians had earlier claimed the Grammys voting system is “rigged” and “corrupt.” Zayn Malik, The Weeknd, Kanye West and Halsey have been among the star-studded critics slamming the awards show.
“It can often be about behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine, with the right handshakes and ‘bribes’ that can be just ambiguous enough to pass as ‘not-bribes,’” said Halsey in an Instagram story earlier this year.
The Staples Center — which will be renamed Crypto.com Arena on Christmas Day — will host the biggest night for music on Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, in Los Angeles, in a broadcast that will air live on CBS.
