Jaguars’ Urban Meyer issues reassuring statement to fans that’s not all that reassuring

From Jacksonville to Relax-sonville, Urban Meyer wants you to calm down.

Any reasonable football fan understands that starting a season 2-0 is no guarantee of success — and starting 0-2 isn’t necessarily a death knell on the season (even if the numbers aren’t in their favor).

The Jaguars, though, have started 0-2 in the 2021 and have played largely uninspiring football, leading some fans to sound the alarm bells after just two weeks of the season.

Meyer recognizes this, and following their demoralizing loss to the Broncos in which Trevor Lawrence looked pretty bad again and the Jags were generally outclassed, the Jags head coach had a brief, relatively uninspiring message which is more concerning than it is reassuring:

“Hang in there with us. We’re going to get better,” Meyer’s statement reads. “The one thing about Jacksonville and 904, go to sleep knowing there’s not going to be any group working harder to get this thing flipped.”

While everyone expected the Jaguars to have some bumps in the road in Year 1 of the Meyer tenure, giving the fans a reassuring statement this early on seems more self-serving than it does legitimate message to fans.

Lawrence lost just two games in his college career, and he already matched that with his first two NFL starts: Through two games, Lawrence has thrown for 450 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions, the latter number leading the NFL. But he is a rookie QB, no matter how highly touted, so don’t be surprised at the lack of true success early on.

So what Meyer is saying, to the fans and everybody and  Jaguar nation: He’s sorry. He’s extremely sorry. And he’ll promise you one thing: You’ll never see any coach, coach as hard as he will the rest of the season. Or something.
