Is Turkey staying on the red list? Holiday hopefuls in despair after no amber list move

Turkey is one of the most notable exceptions to the green and amber lists, with puzzled holidaymakers questioning why travel is still not permitted there. Annoyed Brits took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at Turkey still being on the red list.

One user said: “Please tell me Turkey will go amber?! Very unfair them being kept on it, they have done everything right this time around.”

Another pleaded with Transport Secretary Grant Schapps, posting: “Please please put Turkey on the amber list!

“Many are desperate to see their family and friends and I am planning to study there for a year for my exchange, cases are low now and vaccination rates going up.”

Turkey has become one of the top holiday destinations in Europe in recent years.

The country was added to the red list in May, meaning travel to and from the country is advised against and anyone who does so will need to quarantine in a designated hotel for ten days when they return to the UK.

The quarantine period cannot be carried out at home or at any other accommodation, and will set you back more than £1,000.

But holidaymakers were hoping Turkey would be added at least to the amber list in the most recent changes to the travel lists, but this was not the case.

From July 19, double vaccinated Brits will be able to travel to amber list countries without needing to quarantine at home or in a hotel upon their return, providing they test negative.

Turkey currently an average rate of 42 infections per 100,000 people in the last seven days – well below that of the UK and some other European countries.

Amber-listed Portugal, by way of comparison, has 192.85 cases per 100,000.

Turkey is currently letting UK travellers into the country, providing they have a negative PCR test at least 72 hours prior to arrival.

Elsewhere, Bulgaria and Hong Kong will be added to the green list, meaning quarantine-free travel regardless of people’s vaccine status.

Croatia and Taiwan are being moved to the green watchlist.

The rules are the same as the green list, but nations on the green watchlist are at risk of moving from green to amber.

Cuba, Indonesia, Myanmar and Sierra Leone will be added to the red list.
