Inside look at weird new Woolies

Woolworths has opened a brand new supermarket and it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Queensland’s first customer-free grocery store has opened to meet huge demand for drive-through and online orders.

Woolworths has unveiled a massive new 10,000 sqm store in Brisbane dedicated entirely to online orders.

Demand for online groceries has more than tripled in the past three years.

The site is located at Goodman’s Rochedale Motorway Estate and will support up to 30,000 orders each week for customers stretching from Beenleigh to Mt Ommaney.

“Online grocery shopping has been well and truly embraced by our Brisbane customers, many of whom are looking to reclaim time in their busy lives,” Woolworths executive Sally Copland said.

“This facility is an important part of our ongoing commitment to providing customers with high-quality products fresher, faster and more convenient than ever before.”

A purpose-built facility, the Brisbane store will offer a more efficient experience for Woolies personal shopper staff to hand pack orders from a range of more than 25,000 products.

Woolworths predicts it will help create up to 800 jobs.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the store was a sign of the times.

“Fast, convenient services are essential to meet the needs of our growing city, as modern life demands choice and flexibility,” Mr Schrinner said.

The store features more than 850 solar panels, which will provide 20 per cent of the store’s required energy.
