Infinite Frontier Turns a DC Icon Into a Horrifying Weapon

Darkseid’s plan for the multiverse involves weaponizing a powerful hero, and it’s a horrifying callback to a previous crisis event.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #3, on sale now from DC.

Barry Allen — the Flash of Earth-0 — is one of the most powerful and notable speedsters in the entire DC Multiverse. One of the first heroes to ever venture across realities, the Flash remains one of the most powerful multiversal figures in the DC Universe. He’s traveled across the multiverse, saving countless lives even at the occasional cost of his own (such as his famous demise in Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez).

But it looks like that same power is being weaponized by nefarious sources in Infinite Frontier #3 by Joshua Williamson, Paul Pelletier, Jesus Merino, Tom Derenick, Xermanico, Norm Rapmund, Raul Fernandez, Romulo Fajardo, Jr. and Tom Napolitano, giving one of DC’s most powerful forces of evil a serious new advantage to help in their mysterious designs for the multiverse.

Flash Darkseid Infinite Frontier 1

Since the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the heroes of the core DC Universe have become increasingly aware of the multiverse and the ramifications of what happens across it. To that end, Barry Allen has been exploring other worlds, with his travels eventually bringing him to Earth-Omega. A mysterious and decrypt planet, Earth-Omega is secretly the new home of Darkseid and his disciple, the Psycho-Pirate. Upon reaching this new world, the Flash was attacked and captured by the villains, with Barry seemingly having some important role to play in their plans. The new Black Lantern Roy Harper has seen a vision of Flash in pain, but Infinite Frontier #3 digs deeper into his fate and what’s befallen him on that world.

On Earth-Omega, the Flash is revealed to be trapped in a massive machine that harnesses his power as he runs at top speeds. The machine appears to be similar to the device the Anti-Monitor previously utilized against the Flash. Barry doesn’t realize he’s been trapped, however, thanks to the manipulative powers of the Psycho-Pirate. Instead of perceiving the truth of what’s happening to him, the Flash believes he’s racing alongside Jay Garrick in a Silver Age-inspired world, trying to save the multiverse. Barry does his best to follow Jay’s orders — while also chasing after someone calling for his help. However, the world seems to glitch around this vision, similar to how the world is affected by Darkseid’s influence.

Flash Darkseid Infinite Frontier 2

It’s clear that Barry Allen is having his powers as the Flash weaponized by some of the greatest threats in the DC Universe. The heroes of Justice Incarnate are incapable of finding him, and the apparent connection between Barry and the Black Lantern Roy Harper suggests things might become far more serious and dangerous as Darkseid approaches his mysterious objective for the multiverse. Given that he eliminated the Quintessence with relative ease and has seemingly been empowered by the aftermath of Dark Nights: Death Metal, there’s no telling what Darkseid could really want from the Speed Force energy that Flash is producing by running on his device.

With major players across the DC Universe making their moves to further their control and power across the multiverse, Darkseid and the Psycho-Pirate seemingly gaining control of the Flash’s almost immeasurable power would be a massive boon for the villainous New God. As it currently stands, the future bodes poorly for everyone in the multiverse — especially Barry Allen, who ultimately died in the aftermath of the Anti-Monitor’s plans.
