India’s first-ever sports NFT features Dinesh Karthik’s iconic Nidahas Trophy last-ball six

Cricketer Dinesh Karthik finds himself in a different kind of auction this month. This time for India’s first ever sports NFT (non-fungible token) auction which will involve one of Karthik’s iconic career moments – the last-ball six in the 2018 India-Bangladesh match which won India the Nidahas Trophy that year – captured as digital art replete with an animated clip that showcases Karthik’s thoughts as he faced down the opposing team in the game’s final minutes.

“Every three years as players, we go into an auction, so it’s always interesting, to put it mildly, but exciting too. It’s something that determines what you’ve done over a period of time. But when it comes to this auction, it’s very different because it’s the first sporting NFT to come from India. And the fact that this is the first cricket NFT makes it even more exciting for us,” Karthik said.

He said the moment is among the most-watched YouTube sports videos in the world and that it was amazing to relive it and share it from his perspective through the process of this collaboration with squash player Saurav Ghosal. The two sportsmen coordinated with tech partners in New York to produce the digital art, titled “Six For The Win.”

“We hope that ‘Six For The Win’ will usher in an era of sporting NFTs. It’s very exciting for us to be pioneers in the Indian NFT space itself, which already has huge success in the USA and elsewhere. Non-fungible tokens are stored on a block-chain, like cryptocurrency, which means they can’t be exchanged or broken down, and you have an accurate history from provenance onwards so that they can’t be counterfeited. There is great potential here for digital art and other forms of memorabilia,” Ghosal said.

He said that with this auction, he hopes that the awareness about what an NFT is and its value will increase among the Indian masses.

“An NFT increases in value over time and the ownership and the providence of having an NFT is like owning a high value painting,” Ghosal explained. “It’s come out very close to what we envisioned it to be. And I think that’s the quality of the content that this particular NFT has is something that should help take the ball home, in terms of the auction.

He added the winning bidder at the auction will also receive the autographed jersey that Karthik was wearing during the Nidahas Trophy match, making it a piece of sporting memorabilia as well.

“I just wanted people know the emotion behind it… What was the bowler thinking? What was I going through at that point of time? What were the small things that happened during the match? I was able to put this together in this small animated video and it looks really good. I’m very intrigued to see what sort of appreciation and love this gets,” Karthik said.

The auction is currently on and will be held till October 22nd on
