India to roll out hydrogen-powered train on next I-Day, says Vaishnaw – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw while speaking at a programme ‘Modi@20- Dreams meet Delivery’ organised at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, a deemed to be university, here on Thursday said India will roll out its first hydrogen-powered train, designed, developed and manufactured indigenously, on the next Independence Day.
Vaishnaw said India has been able to build trains which are among the best in the world and the next big thing will be when the hydrogen-powered train is rolled out on August 15, 2023. “A train, Vande Bharat Express, built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, recently is among the best five trains in the world,” he added.
He said this train is better than all other trains on multiple parameters. “A glass of water kept in the driver’s cabin stays undisturbed even when the train moves at maximum speed indicating its stability. It starts generating power the moment the brakes are applied,” he added.
The railway minister said Vande Bharat Express train took only 52 seconds to move from zero speed to 100 km per hour while the famed Bullet train in Japan took 55 seconds for the same. “Initially, the engineers thought they would import the same from developed countries, but the Prime Minister insisted that the same should be built in India,” he added.
Two trains which were introduced in 2019 had performed exceedingly well and the distance they had covered so far would equal 18 journeys round the earth without any major breakdown, he said.
He said IIT-Madras was developing the Hyperloop which he described as the most promising transport.
Railways has put emphasis on cleanliness of railway stations. It has prepared a complete satellite map of the country to identify 132 district headquarter towns which needed railway connectivity. The railway minister said that the punctuality of trains in India was around 89 per cent at present which needed to reach 100 per cent.
Vaishnaw, who is also the Union communication minister, said the IT ministry will provide the needed 5G spectrum and extend the assistance for setting up of a 5G Lab and a Software Development lab within 30 days of receipt of the application. SOA sources said steps were being taken for establishment of these two labs.
While interacting with students and faculty members of the institution, the union minister said 5G connectivity would come as the biggest boon for the healthcare, agriculture and education sectors.
