‘I’m impressed’ Family shocked to learn they can save thousands by going green

Mum Jenny, and dad Carlos tested planet friendly products to try and see if even little changes can make a difference for their pockets and the planet. Britons can work out their carbon footprint to know if they are negatively impacting the planet. Carbon footprint is measured by how many greenhouse gasses are produced as a result of the things people do or buy, and the average carbon footprint the UK is just under 13 tonnes.

The Moores were shocked when Jo and Jordan revealed that each person in the house has a carbon footprint of 18 tonnes a year, way above the national average.

Jenny’s car is a fuel “guzzler”, costing her about £3,000 a year for diesel. But the team suggested alternatives she could consider that are cheaper, and are better for her carbon footprint.

If Jenny is able to swap her car to an electric one, she could be saving heaps on her diesel costs, and cutting her carbon footprint down to 8tonnes a year.

The Moores could save £5,000 a year on fuel if they swap their cars for more eco-friendly ones.

Additionally, the Moores enjoy a family holiday, as well as visiting their family in Barbados each year. However, the environmental impact of their flights is three times the national average.

The family of six end up spending around £5,000 each holiday including hotels and long-haul flights.

However, if they swapped one of their holidays abroad, for a UK staycation, they could cut their costs to £1,500 and save 10 tonnes altogether on their carbon footprint.

If they were to travel abroad every other year, they could save £1000 just on flights.

DON’T MISS

The Moores have about 20 plastic bottles of shower gel alone, however if they swap their bottles for one five litre container with refillable dispensers, the family could be saving £70 a year. They may pay more upfront but over the year it is a huge saving, and good for planet as it is less waste.

Additionally, instead of using new tooth brushes each month, the family could buy recyclable electric toothbrush heads. This would save £42 a year.

The Moores have over 40 cleaning products in single plastic bottles, however if they swap these for concentrated capsules they can dissolve in water, they could save on plastic bottles and money.

After using one of the capsules on the cooker hood Jenny said: “Wow, I wasn’t expecting that! I didn’t have much faith in this degreaser but wow it’s good”.

Since lockdown Jenny and her son Tariq have embraced a plant-based diet but the whole family is not convinced.

However, reducing one’s meat intake to one or two times a week can have a positive impact on their carbon footprint.

Former greengrocer Chris Bavin explained the importance of eating in season.

He said: “Nothing makes me happier than people eating with locally produced, seasoned veg.

“If you eat with the seasons, it can drastically reduce your carbon footprint and the cost of your food as well.”

If the family take on board all of the team’s swap suggestions, they can reduce their carbon footprint down to 13.5 tonnes per person.

Jordan said: “Smashed it. That’s a potential reduction of 4.5 tonnes per person and that is huge

Carlos said: “I’m impressed, I didn’t think it would be that much.

“Shows how much we waste, and we use stuff we don’t need.”
