IF YOU’RE in an area with poor mobile phone reception, there’s an easy trick to give your signal a quick boost.
By toggling your gadget’s aeroplane mode on and off, you can improve your connection in seconds.
The little-known trick was highlighted by TikTok tech guru @scottpolderman earlier this year.
The influencer has made a name for himself sharing useful iPhone tips and tricks with his 1.4million followers.
And his latest one is a workaround for those moments where your mobile isn’t connected to the best possible cellular tower.
Inside your smartphone is a modem, which lets it connect to nearby towers.
These towers are how your mobile network (such as EE or Verizon) connect your phone to others.
When you’re moving around, or in and out of buildings, your modem will switch between towers to give you the best possible signal.
However, this method isn’t entirely foolproof.
Constantly scanning for new towers to find the best connection uses up a lot of power, so your phone doesn’t constantly scan for new networks to jump on.
Instead, it’ll check periodically to see if there’s a better connection available.
But you can force your iPhone to check for a new signal very easily.
All you need to do is turn on Airplane Mode for a few seconds, and then turn it back off.
Airplane Mode shuts off all outgoing connections, so it effectively resets your phone’s modem.
This will force the iPhone to immediately scan for the best possible connection.
It’s a particularly handy trick if you’re getting a rubbish 3G signal instead of 4G or 5G signals that will give you nippy internet speeds.
It’s very useful when you’re travelling at speed, too – like on a train or in a car.
You’ll potentially move through network towers very quickly during a journey, so resetting your connection can give you a quick signal boost – rather than leaving you clinging on to a distant tower.
How to turn Airplane Mode on for iPhone and iPad
First, you’ll need to open the Control Centre by swiping down from the top-right corner of your iPhone display.
On iPhones older than the iPhone X, simply swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen on an iPhone.
And on an iPad, you can just double-click the Home button.
Next, look for the airplane icon in the top left of your Control Centre.
Tap it, and wait for a few seconds. Then, tap it again to turn it off.
You should see your phone completely lose signal, then regain it again quickly.
And you should now be connected to the best possible network available.
