WHEN it’s time to trade in your old motor, there are various options available to you.
To get the best price you’ll need to sell it yourself, but let’s be honest, it’s quite a bit of hassle.
Another option is to head online, stick in your reg and take your car to one of the many online car buying services now on offer.
However, we spoke with a car dealer with his own dealership who reckons the good old part exchange is still the best option for most people
He wanted to remain anonymous but has been in the business for 15 years, starting from the bottom.
In that time he said he has sold everything from Fiestas to Ferraris to people aged 17 to 70.
He said: “These online car buying platforms seem convenient, but I know for a fact that when you take your car in you’ll never achieve the price shown to you on the website.
“The people that work there usually have targets for how much to knock the price down by and get rewarded for doing do.
“In my opinion part exchanging your car is the best bet.
“It’s the least hassle, nine times out of ten you’ll get a better price than online saving you £100s and dealers are currently desperate for stock so getting a good price for a good car is more likely.”
But he did warn that there are things people need to remember when part exchanging their car in order to get the best price for it.
“Go in with a good idea of what your car is worth. There are plenty of online tools that’ll give you a good idea of its value. It’s no great secret.
“And don’t rock up with your car in an absolute state. I’ve seen some terrible interiors over the years and it just puts a dealer off meaning they offer less.
Lastly, make sure you give accurate info about your car when you first enquire.
“I’ve had people tell me their part exchange has done 40,000 miles and when it turns up it’s done 70,000. It makes a huge difference to the price.”
